The Buzz About Moderate Drinking
![](https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/2ef84b93-c4da-40a6-add2-2ac41793a87d/image.png?t=1738971206)
Congratulations, you made it through Dry January! Now drink up. No, really. Drinking might actually be good for you. Wait, let me rephrase that. moderate drinking might actually be good for you. It’s a topic as complex as a craft cocktail, and today we’re shaking things up with some studies and a splash of fun.
First, let’s define “moderate drinking.” For women, it’s typically one drink a day, and for men, it’s two. Think of it as sipping, not chugging. Over the years, moderate drinking has been linked to potential health perks, especially for the heart.
Studies like the famous 90+ Study from the University of California Irvine found that people who enjoyed a daily glass of wine or beer had an 18% lower risk of early death compared to those who abstained entirely. That’s even better odds than regular exercise! (But don’t ditch the gym just yet.)
Another study from the Netherlands showed that light drinkers (those who consumed about half to one-and-a-half drinks per day) were more likely to reach the age of 90. Cheers to that! But before you pour yourself another glass, there’s more.
The Heart Wants What the Heart Wants
One reason moderate drinking is good for you is its effect on cardiovascular health. Research shows that alcohol can raise your HDL cholesterol (the “good” kind) and improve blood clotting factors, reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Red wine is even better because of resveratrol, an antioxidant found in grape skins. Yay! But here’s the catch. You’d need to drink gallons of wine to get enough resveratrol to make a real difference. Aww. So maybe stick with grapes instead.
It’s Not All Rosé and Rainbows
Here’s where things get tricky. Moderate drinking might be good for your heart, but it can also increase the risk of some cancers, like mouth and throat cancer. Yikes. A study in Taiwan showed moderate drinkers lived about a year longer than non-drinkers but had up to four times the cancer risk. Also, new research suggests the benefits of moderate drinking might be overstated because some studies included former drinkers with health issues in the “non-drinker” group. When researchers corrected for these biases, they found little to no longevity benefit from alcohol at all.
The J Curve
Many experts describe alcohol's effects on lifespan as a J-shaped curve. At low levels (moderate drinking), there might be slight benefits. But once you tip into heavier drinking territory, risks like liver disease, heart failure, and early death skyrocket. It’s a delicate balance and one that’s easy to lose after “just one more.”
So Should You or Shouldn’t You?
The answer depends on your personal health goals and habits. If you enjoy a glass of wine with dinner and don’t overdo it, you’re probably fine. But if you’re hoping alcohol will be your ticket to living past 100, well, don’t bank on it. Experts increasingly emphasize that no level of alcohol is completely risk-free. So moderation is key if you choose to drink at all.
For those who crushed Dry January and are thinking about extending their break from booze, there’s good news. Alcohol-free lifestyles are gaining traction as people prioritize their overall health. And hey, sparkling water with lime is pretty classy too.
Final Sip
Moderate drinking is like walking a tightrope. It might offer some benefits if done carefully but can quickly turn risky if overindulged. The science isn’t crystal clear (and probably never will be), but one thing is certain. Whether you’re raising a glass or sticking with mocktails, what matters most is making choices that align with your health. So sip champagne or sparkling water and cheers to living your best life!
The Rematch: Chiefs vs. Eagles

Super Bowl LIX is shaping up to be an epic showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. If you’re feeling a sense of déjà vu, it’s because these two powerhouse teams faced off in Super Bowl LVII just two years ago.
In that showdown, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a thrilling second-half comeback, securing a nail-biting 38-35 win over the Eagles. That win set the stage for Kansas City’s current dominance. They’ve now won back-to-back Super Bowls and are chasing history as the first team to win three in a row.
The Eagles, on the other hand, are hungry for revenge. They’ve been one of the most consistent teams in the league this season, finishing with only three losses and dominating their way through the playoffs. With new stars like Saquon Barkley powering their offense, they’re determined to stop Kansas City’s dynasty in its tracks.
This year’s game will be played at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The city has hosted more Super Bowls (eight) than any other venue. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 9, so make sure you’re parked on your couch or at your favorite watch party by then.
Odds and Predictions
Oddsmakers expect a tight game, with Kansas City favored by just 1.5 points. The over/under is 48.5, showing how explosive both offenses can be. Predictions are split. Some believe Mahomes’ clutch play gives the Chiefs an edge, while others think Philly’s balanced roster and strong running game, led by Saquon Barkley, could wear down KC’s defense. Experts predict another thriller that might be decided by the last possession. That would be fun.
Halftime Show Extravaganza
If football isn’t your thing, there’s always the halftime show, which has turned into a major spectacle itself. This year’s headliner is Kendrick Lamar, who is fresh off his Grammy wins for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. He’ll be joined by special guest SZA for what promises to be a memorable performance.
What’s at Stake
For Kansas City, this game is about cementing their legacy as one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history. A third straight Super Bowl win would put them in uncharted territory. For Philadelphia, it’s about revenge and reclaiming their place atop the NFL after their last championship win in 2017.
No matter which side you’re rooting for, or if you’re just here for the commercials and snacks, Super Bowl LIX is shaping up to be an unforgettable event. So grab your wings (an estimated 1 billion will be consumed during the game!), settle into your favorite chair, and get ready for an evening of football greatness. Will it be a Mahomes magic or Philly redemption? We’ll find out on Sunday night!
