You might not realize it, but having strong legs can help you live longer. It’s true! Building and maintaining strong legs can increase our lifespan, help prevent chronic diseases, and even boost brain health as we age. Plus, when your legs are strong, you can move around better, which means you can stay independent and active. This is especially important as we get older because weak legs can lead to falls and injuries, which can cause serious health problems.
Strong Legs Help You Live Longer
Believe it or not, leg strength can actually predict how long you’ll live. A study published in the European Journal of Epidemiology tracked older adults over six years and found those with more leg strength had a lower risk of mortality, even when accounting for age, sex, and health history. Another study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that older adults with higher leg power had a reduced risk of death from any cause over a six-year period.
